Palmetto St. Augustine: In 1988, a strand of St. Augustine grass was discovered growing under a large oak tree in almost complete shade. In 1994, after many years of research and tests, a new, more tolerant variety of St. Augustine was introduced named Palmetto. It might not be miracle grass, but it's close.

Best attribute:
  • Better color
  • Finer texture
  • Extreme cold tolerance
  • Extreme drought tolerance
  • Extreme shade tolerance
  • Disease resistant
  • Salt tolerance
  • Can be grown from the Carolina's to California.
Worst attribute:
  • Wear resistant only fair
  • Has to be mowed like all other grass
